What is a rootless voicing?
A left-hand voicing that leaves the root to the bass and stacks the 3rd, 5th, 7th and 9th instead — the sound behind Bill Evans and most modern jazz trios. saveit.ink shows it on the keyboard with the root omitted.
How do I practise ii-V-I?
Pick the ii-V-I progression, choose a key or send it around the cycle of fourths, set a tempo, and drill it with shell or rootless voicings and a walking-bass or comping left hand.
