Frequently asked questions
How does the chord detection work?
We download the audio from YouTube, then run it through a signal-processing pipeline. First we separate harmonic content from percussion (HPSS), then track the beat grid with a neural beat tracker (madmom), and finally match each beat window against a bank of 24 chord templates (all major and minor keys). The detected key is used to resolve ambiguous chords and keep the result musically coherent.
How accurate is it?
On guitar-driven and piano-driven songs β pop, rock, folk, country β accuracy is typically very good. It handles open chords, barre chords, and common seventh chords well. Dense orchestral arrangements or songs with heavy electronic production are harder. Premium users can enable HQ mode (Demucs stem separation) which isolates the harmonic instrument before analysis and gives significantly better results on complex tracks.
What kinds of songs work best?
Acoustic guitar, solo piano, singer-songwriter, and classic rock tracks get the best results. Songs where a single chordal instrument is prominent in the mix are ideal. Heavily produced EDM, rap beats without harmonic content, or songs where the melody heavily obscures the harmony may give less accurate results.
Does it work for any YouTube video?
Yes, as long as the video is public, has audio, and is under 30 minutes. Private videos, age-restricted videos, or videos blocked in certain regions can't be processed. Covers, live performances, and studio recordings all work β we analyze whatever audio is in the video. For songs longer than 10 minutes, only the first 10 minutes are analyzed.
How long does analysis take?
Most songs are ready in under 2 minutes. A 4-minute track typically takes 60β90 seconds on standard mode. HQ mode (Demucs) runs stem separation first, which adds 2β4 minutes depending on song length. You'll get an email when it's done so you don't have to wait at the screen.
What's the difference between standard and HQ analysis?
Standard analysis works directly on the full mix. HQ analysis (Premium only) first runs Demucs β a state-of-the-art source separation model β to isolate the guitar or piano track from the rest of the mix. Chord detection then runs on the clean instrument signal, which removes vocal interference, drums, and bass from the calculation. The result is noticeably more accurate on busy arrangements.
Can I export chords to use in other apps?
Yes. Premium users can export any song as a printable PDF (great for rehearsal or stage use) or as a .cho ChordPro file compatible with OnSong, Songbook Pro, and most tab editors. The ChordPro file includes all chords with timing markers.
What is the practice room?
It is where chords become real two-hand piano β the heart of saveit.ink, free on every plan. You choose what to work on: one chord quality across all twelve keys, the diatonic chords of any key and scale, or one progression such as ii–V–I, rhythm changes or a 12-bar blues, repeated for as long as you like and optionally moving around the cycle of fourths. Each chord is shown on a keyboard, as chord names, or as full staff notation with the correct key signature, and every note lights up as it plays. You can read it with smooth voice-leading or drill each inversion, add a left-hand accompaniment, run a metronome, go full-screen, save drills and build a daily streak. Any song you analyse drops in with one click.
Which styles and voicings can I practise?
The practice room offers the two-hand voicings pianists actually use per genre: classical/hymn (root + fifth under a close 3-5-7), pop and bossa (open 9ths), jazz shell (1-3-7) and rootless voicings, jazz spread, gospel, R&B/neo-soul, blues and rock octaves. Each is the real distribution of notes between the hands β root and guide tones in the left, extensions like the 9th, 11th and 13th in the right β and it adapts to the chord's quality, so the third and seventh bend correctly for major 7th, dominant and minor 7th chords. On top of that, 29 left-hand accompaniment grooves span jazz, blues, Latin, gospel, pop, classical and rock.
Can I read it as sheet music?
Yes. Any drill or song's chords can be shown as standard staff notation β treble and bass clef, the correct key signature for the key you chose, and, when a left-hand groove is on, the pattern written with its real rhythm. You can also switch to a piano-keyboard diagram or plain chord names at any time.
Is my data private?
Analyzed songs are stored on our servers so they can be shared publicly and re-used by other users who analyze the same YouTube video β this is how we avoid re-processing the same song twice. Your personal library, transpositions, and capo settings are private to your account. We don't sell any data.
Do I need a credit card to sign up?
No. The free plan gives you 3 analyses per month with no card required. You only need payment details if you upgrade to Premium.
